JOHOR BARU: Johor’s move to Phase Four of the National Recovery Plan (NRP) will help spur the local economy, say business groups

       Johor Malay NGO Coalition Council president Zaini Atan said that he expects to see a significant increase in business and tourism when the transition takes effect tomorrow.

       “We saw a huge difference when Johor moved from Phase Two to Phase Three of the NRP earlier this month. Traders and small business owner slowly opened up.

       “We expect to see the same thing now and the changes may even be more significant,” he added.

       Malaysia Federation of Hawkers and Petty Traders Associations president Datuk Yow Boon Choon said that while he lauded the move, he also hopes that the public and business community stay cautious.

       “It is important that we continue to adhere to the standard operating procedure (SOP) to protect ourselves and continue enjoying the easing of restrictions,” he said.

       Yow added that between 50% and 70% of traders have reopened.

       “The rest are still worried about safety and are opting to remain closed. However, I believe that with the transition, we will see more traders opening up,” he said.

       Johor Muafakat Bus Operators and Drivers’ Association president R. Thiagarajan said that while the state’s move to Phase Four would help the transportation industry, particularly tour and express buses, it may take some time to see results.

       “For now, many are still afraid to use buses and are still very careful. While we saw an increase in activities, it is still rather slow.

       “It may take some time for people to get their confidence back to travel via buses,” he said.
