Sir Ed Davey says the UK has to have a trade deal with the EU (Image: Getty)
Sir Ed Davey appears to have ruled out shackling Britain to the European Union's single market in an apparent U-turn over Brexit. The Liberal Democrats say in their General Election manifesto they want to repair relations with the EU before seeking to join the bloc's single market.
Lib Dem leader Sir Ed told GB News on the campaign trail in Chelmsford, Essex, that a lot of work was required before Britain could re-join the EU.

He said Britain needs a trade deal with the EU "really quickly", describing the Trade and Cooperation Agreement free trade deal signed between the Conservative government and EU as "awful".
Sir Ed told the channel that farmers, fishermen, exporters, importers and consumers have been hit by the deal, signed in 2020 and subject to review every five years.
The Lib Dem leader said: "We've got to have a trade deal. It can't be the single market. I've talked to European politicians and that's not on the table.

"What we can do though, is have a much better trade deal, mutually beneficial. I think that would really help revive our economy, get the growth we need and help bear down [on] inflation too."
Labour, Reform UK and the Conservatives have all ruled out re-joining the bloc or the single market in their manifestoes.
While Brexit hasn't featured prominently during campaigning, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak this week stepped up attacks on Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer on the eighth anniversary of the vote to leave the EU.
The PM said while he was proud to have voted for Brexit and the Tories had delivered on the will of the people, Sir Keir had tried to reverse the vote.
Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch has said Brexit would be at risk if Sir Keir were to become prime minister. She described Brexit as a "10 or 20-year project" in an interview with the Telegraph and claimed any benefits would vanish under a Labour government.

Sir Keir has insisted he wants a better trading relationship with the EU, but ruled out Britain re-joining the single market or customs union under a Labour government.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage accused the Tories of a breach of trust over its handling of Brexit, pointing to rising net migration despite Leave campaign assurances leaving the EU would take back control of Britain's borders.
There are nine candidates in Chelmsford: Vicky Ford (Conservatives), Marie Goldman (Lib Dems), Reza Hossain (Greens), Richard Hyland (Independent Network), Darren Ingrouille (Reform UK), Mark Stephen Kenlen (Workers Party of Britain), Mark Citizen Lawrence (Monster Raving Loony Party), Richard William Parry (Labour) and Kamla Sangha (independent).
