Sir Keir Starmer is facing a furious backlash over his EU deal as critics accused him of a "Brexit betrayal".

Critics have warned the Prime Minister has been “stitched up like a kipper” by Europe as his “sell-out” for smoother trade will crush the UK fishing industry, drive up immigration and cost taxpayers millions.

That is utter rubbish from Keir Starmer and not for the first time, quite frankly. It is Britain that led international efforts when it came to Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, so he needs to go away and do some homework."

       UK becomes a 'rule taker'

Conservative Mark Francois says the "most pernicious" part of the deal is what's called dynamic alignment - which means the UK has to agree to follow EU rules.

Sir Keir says any new rules will go through a "Parliamentary process" in the UK Parliament.

Mark Francois points out that the European court will be the ultimate authority on any disagreement about the rules.

Sir Keir argues that Conservatives oppose any new trade deals.

       Starmer's deal isn't real

Kemi Badenoch points out (correctly) that much of Starmer's deal isn't actually agreed. Instead, the EU and UL have simply agreed to hold talks about coming to an agreement.

She says there is no guarantee British travellers will be able to skip passport queues and use e-gates at airports, as the deal merely states that airports will be allowed to include British travellers in e-gate schemes, not that they will necessarily do it.

EU deal is 'reasonably good' for fishermen

Environment Secretary Steve Reed described the EU agreement as a "reasonably good deal" for the UK fishing sector as he was challenged by MPs on Tuesday.

Speaking to the Environment Committee, Mr Reed highlighted how food and drinks exports from the UK to the bloc have declined 21% since 2018, describing the deal as a "huge boost for the UK agri-food and food and drink sectors".

Committee chairman Alistair Carmichael said there is a "fair amount of agreement among MPs around the table" over the benefits for those sectors before quizzing the Environment Secretary about concerns and anger among the fishing industry.

Mr Reed said: "I think this is a reasonably good deal for the UK fishing sector. Compared to what some of the speculation was, and indeed some of the pressures on our negotiating team, the EU was interested in more quota, more access to EU territorial waters.

"They were looking for a deal on fishing in perpetuity, and they were trying to achieve that by making what I felt was a spurious link between fishing and an SPS (sanitary and phytosanitary) deal."

The Chancellor told the BBC: “Britain is in a better place than any other country in the world in terms of deals with those countries.”

She added: “The first deal and the best deal so far with the US, we’ve got the best deal with the EU for any country outside the EU, and we’ve got the best trade agreement with India.”

Dame Priti Patel: Starmer is intent on betraying Britain

Dame Priti Patel blasted Sir Keir Starmer's EU deal and comments on Britain's standing in the World.

She declared: “What a load of nonsense, quite frankly.

“That is utter rubbish from Keir Starmer and not for the first time, quite frankly.

“It is Britain that led international efforts when it came to Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, so he needs to go away and do some homework.

“Of course, it was Conservatives in Government that led the way when it came to Britain post-Brexit securing those trade deals, over 70 trade agreements during our tenure in Government.

“We’re not going to listen to that nonsense from Keir Starmer who just wants to constantly betray Britain, the democratic vote of the British people when it came to the Brexit referendum.

“I think he needs to go back and recalibrate his very smug comments.”

A new poll is a hammer blow for the Tories and Labour

Nigel Farage has received a huge boost this morning as a shock new poll puts the party firmly on top in the race for power.

Reform UK has a seven-point lead on 29%, according to the YouGov poll for Sky News and The Times.

But Kemi Badenoch suffered a huge blow after new analysis suggested the Lib Dems are more popular than the Conservatives.

Just 16% of voters said they would back the Tories in a ballot.

This is compared to 17% for the Liberal Democrats.

Starmer's deal is 'waffle' says top Tory Ben Wallace

Ben Wallace, former defence secretary, criticised the government's new deal with the EU, calling it a "mixture of waffle and concrete":

"I don't know what the government's trying to do, because there's no, almost no detail. I think what I could sum up about the document, and I've read it three or four times trying to look for something, it's a mixture of waffle and concrete.

"I mean, the concrete measure is, give French fishermen another extension for years of access to our fishing rights. That seems to be a concrete issue.

"Even the passport e-gates is not as it seems, or as it was spun by the spinners. The EU says, or reiterates, that the states, the nation states could, if they want, allow Brits to use e-gates, but it's not going to tell them to use it. So that's not really going to change in many countries who don't want us, who want us to pay the price of leaving."

Tories will cancel EU deal - even if they break the law

The shadow Business Secretary has said a Conservative government would be willing to break international law to cancel the Government’s deal with the EU.

Speaking on GB News, Andrew Griffith said:

“We would never have done anything even remotely like this deal. This is a terrible deal; it's a surrender Summit. It's a betrayal of Brexit, both in substance and in form.

“It puts the EU tomorrow, after this deal, in more control over our rules. It goes back to us being a rule taker, with the arbiter being the European Court of Justice."

New EU deal 'will boost support for Reform'

Academic Matt Goodwin argues that Keir Starmer's new EU deal will push more voters into the arms of Reform and Nigel Farage.

He said: "Here’s a question I never thought I’d ask. Is Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer deliberately trying to increase support for Nigel Farage and Reform?

Because that’s the only conclusion one would draw after looking at the choices being made by Starmer and his team, many of which appear to have come straight out of the handbook on how to inflame a populist revolt against the system.

Take yesterday’s ‘reset deal’ between Labour and the European Union (EU). Curiously, Starmer and his team have decided to respond to the rise of a pro-Brexit, anti-immigration party that draws much of its strength from the working-class and disillusioned voters in coastal towns by presiding over a deal that appears hard-wired to push even more of these voters straight into Farage’s arms."

He made the comments in his Substack newsletter.

Minister defends cost of EU deal

The cost to taxpayers from Sir Keir Starmer's deal with the European Union will be outweighed by the economic benefits, industry minister Sarah Jones said.

The UK will pay administration costs, which have yet to be decided, for participation in measures such as the scheme to make it easier to ship animal and plant products to the EU.

Ms Jones told Sky News: "We are not paying, through any of this, for access to markets. That is not what we are doing. We are not rejoining the EU.

"Where we will pay, and these things will be negotiated, where we will pay is where there are joint costs that need to be paid."

She added: "Whatever administrative costs we have to pay, and they will be negotiated and I don't have an answer for you now on what those costs are, they will be outweighed very significantly by what we estimate will be a £9 billion advantage a year by 2040."
