GEORGE TOWN: Revellers enjoying New Year’s Eve celebrations were caught off guard by some 1,000 police personnel who were deployed at roadblocks and sent to conduct checks on entertainment outlets here.

       Penang Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Asst Comm Rahimi Ra’ais said the operation took place from 9pm on Friday until 4am yesterday.

       The operation saw a total of 8,164 people and 4,929 vehicles inspected, as well as 1,301 summonses issued and 52 motorcycles seized for various traffic violations.

       Police also arrested 36 people for various criminal offences.
