TOKYO -- Yahoo Japan announced that it had mistakenly sent a notification on Dec. 22 announcing that "a guerrilla and special forces attack" had occurred.
Confusion ensued following the erroneous notification, with the terms "special forces" and "delivery test" trending on Twitter.
According to Yahoo Japan, it delivered a push notification to recipients including users of its Disaster Alert app, stating "Government announcement: A guerrilla and special forces attack has occurred. Applicable area: all of Japan." The title contained the words "delivery test."
Immediately afterward, the company published an apology on its website. A public relations official told the Mainichi Shimbun that the incident had been caused by human error.
In September 2021, Yahoo Japan delivered a mistaken notification that Mount Aso had erupted, and issued a correction and apology.
