D-Day hero, 100, 'breaks neighbour's heart' as he struggles to get out of his house

A 100-year-old D-Day hero who struggles to get out of his house is in desperate need of a mobility scooter.

Despite the war veteran "never asking for any help", his kind-hearted neighbours are now hoping to come to his rescue by raising the cash he needs to get him out and about.

Mark Warren, 49, from Northampton, has been one of the Army private’s neighbours for 20 years and exclusively told Express.co.uk about his friend's plight after launching an online appeal.

Mr Warren, a fleet manager who lives with wife Julie, 47, and son Harvey, 17, said: "His friend takes him out in a rickety old wheelchair - and his friend has a hernia and so struggles to push it.

"I’ve seen it a couple of times coming up the road and it breaks my heart."

"He just needs help. I don’t think he claims anything from the government - he just thinks 'I’ll make do'.

"It’d be great to give him the best life in the years he’s got left and make him feel appreciated for what he did."

Mr Warren says that the former military man who was a part of the D-Day landings 80 years ago yesterday also worries about his heating bills.

He said: "The guy is 100 years old and all through the winter didn’t want to put his heating on because of the bills. He put his life on the line for us and shouldn’t have to be worried about heating his house."

Mr Warren said his neighbour would "never class himself as a war hero" - despite being in the armoured tank brigade where he was tasked with clearing things up, seeing if he could get tanks working, getting bodies out of the tanks and back in again and if tanks weren’t working blowing them up so the Germans couldn’t get them.

He was awarded a black beret for his services of which he is very proud.

The veteran went on to be a chef and work in a department store and now lives in a private dormer bungalow. He has no children.

Mr Warren continued: "Every Remembrance Day, us neighbours get together and raise a glass.

"I think he should have more done for him - some of them are just literally forgotten, especially being 100 and having served his country.

"He never moans about anything. He never asks for any help. He just gets on with it.”
