PETALING JAYA: Ways to speed up the amendment to the Road Transport Act to impose heavier punishment for reckless driving are being looked at.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said the issue of road safety is very important.
“However, we do not want to just punish traffic offenders. We also want to promote advocacy.
“Through this approach, we can educate road users to be more cautious, to love themselves and love those around them.
“Various efforts were made in streamlining advocacy programmes throughout the country, especially with those involving commercial vehicles including lorries, buses and trailers.
“Among these initiatives is the Safety Awareness and Focused Advocacy for Road Users (Safer) initiative,” he said.
So far, 75 programmes have been conducted under Safer, he said in a Facebook post yesterday.
Earlier, Dr Wee attended a road safety awareness campaign programme organised by the Johor Rock Materials Truck Operators Association.
He said that since he took over as minister, road safety has been his main focus.
