Royal hideaway! Kate and William's very private third home has secret romantic meaning

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were given Tam-Na-Ghar in Scotland by the Queen Mother shortly before her death in 2002. The three-bedroom cottage is located on the Balmoral Estate.

The residence is so private there are very few pictures of it.

Kate and William reportedly used the cottage as a retreat when they were students at St Andrew's University.

They also reportedly stayed at their third home in 2019 when the Royal Family gathered at Balmoral Castle for their annual summer holiday.

A source told Vanity Fair at the time: "The Queen has a lot of guests coming and to ease the pressure the Cambridges are likely to stay at the cottage.

"That could have added benefits for everyone as it means more space in the castle.”

Every year, the Queen heads to Balmoral for her summer break where she is joined by other members of the Royal Family.

This year is the monarch's first trip to the Scottish Highlands without her beloved husband Prince Philip, who died in April.

However Kate, William and their three children are expected to be among royals keeping Her Majesty company.

The Cambridges could opt to stay at Tam-Na-Ghar.

They will be nearby Prince Charles and Camilla's Birkhall residence, also on the Balmoral Estate.

Kate and William are also likely to spend some of the summer holidays at their Norfolk residence Anmer Hall.

The family are generally based at their London residence Kensington Palace during term time when Prince George and Princess Charlotte are at school and Prince Louis has nursery.

Royal expert Katie Nicholl told OK! Magazine: "Summer holidays at Anmer are the perfect way for Kate and William to decompress.

"If there are royal engagements for them, they’ll be few and far between.

"While in the past we’ve seen the couple enjoy more lavish holidays skiing or visiting sunnier climates, they’ve been adopting a more traditional royal approach and spending their time at royal residences in the UK instead.

"This could obviously be the result of Covid travel restrictions but I also believe that Kate and William are transforming into the future King and Queen and therefore are adopting more traditional practices.”

The Cambridges reportedly enjoyed a holiday in the Isles of Scilly with their three children recently.
