KUWAIT CITY, Nov 3: Kuwait ranked first in the Arab world and 50th globally in the Social Progress Index for 2021, issued by the American non-profit organization Social Progress Imperial. Kuwait also ranked 15th in the world in terms of per capita GDP, which amounted to 49,854 thousand dollars, reports Al-Rai daily. The Social Progress Index ranks 163 countries for which data is available on 12 components which the organization uses to measure the degree of social progress of countries from the highest to the lowest, with the classification ranging from countries with “very high” social progress to very low”.

The methodology for classifying countries is based on the following elements — Basic human needs: basic medical care and nutrition, water and sanitation, shelters, and personal security; the basics of well-being: access to basic knowledge, access to information and communication, health, and environmental quality; and Opportunities: personal rights, personal freedom and choice, tolerance and access to advanced education. In the sub-indicators, Kuwait ranked 36th in basic human needs, 48th in basics of well-being and 77th in opportunities.

Meanwhile, Tunisia ranked second in the Arab world and 58 globally in the social progress index, followed by the UAE at 67, Jordan 83, and Oman 85. Norway ranked the best country in social progress, followed by Finland second, then Denmark , Iceland, and Switzerland, and Canada respectively. On the other hand, with regard to environmental sustainability, another report by the “Social Progress Imperative” showed Kuwait is among the countries with the highest greenhouse gas emissions, along with Australia, the United States of America, Qatar, Cameroon, and Laos. Although Jamaica and Kuwait have similar SPI scores, Kuwait emits 8 times higher greenhouse gas emissions than Jamaica.
