As part of her Reading Room project the duchess left signed copies of several books in a community library near Birkhall, Aberdeenshire close to her Scottish home. Like many rural libraries it is located in an old telephone box.

Camilla’s Reading Room was started by the duchess in 2020 in order to promote literature and reading during the coronavirus lockdowns.

It has recently involved the “planting” of books in local phone box libraries in recent weeks.

On this occasion, Camilla appeared herself to donate to the library.

Originally bought by her husband the Prince of Wales it was placed on its current location on the B976 three years ago.

Rebecca English Royal Correspondent explained some of the background to the telephone box on Twitter.

She said: “Across the UK, communities are turning their distinctive red telephone boxes into ‘micro libraries’.

“But this one on Royal Deeside is something special.

“The original Sir Giles Gilbert Scott designed-kiosk was bought by the Prince of Wales three years ago and placed on the B976!”

The Duchess left signed copies of The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy and Victoria Hislop’s The Island.

On Instagram the official Clarence House account explained the background to the Duchesses visit.

They said: “With The Reading Room planting signed copies of our authors' books in phonebox libraries around the UK in recent weeks.

“The Duchess of Cornwall decided to swing by this fabulous library near Birkhall, the Scottish home of Their Royal Highnesses, and add to the collection.
