       KUWAIT CITY, Aug 9: It looks like the issue of expatriate workers who are 60 years and above and holding only high school diploma or below has returned to the fore again, reports Al-Rai daily. According to earlier decision this category of employees were required to pay 2,000 dinars to renew the residence permit in addition to the private health insurance. In this regard, the Al-Rai daily has learned that the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Dr. Abdullah Al-Salman, has asked the Public Authority for Manpower (PAM) Board of Directors to reconsider the 2,000 dinars fee. Informed sources indicated Al-Salman has recommended that PAM Board of Directors consider 500 dinars fee for renewal in addition to health insurance from a private insurance company.

       The PAM board of directors is likely to meet next week to discuss the request. The sources indicated that the minister’s proposal has special merit for more than one reason. On the one hand, it is difficult for the largest segment included in the decision to pay 2,000 dinars, in addition to the fact that these expatriates will have to get health insurance from the private sector and will not put pressure on the government health services. Although Al-Salman’s proposal during the previous meeting had only the support of the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Commerce and the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior, reopening the discussion in this regard again will have positive results in terms of broader support for the Minister’s proposal to reduce the fees specified in this regard.
