Oak Lawn High School was placed on lockdown Thursday morning as a precautionary measure as police dealt with an incident blocks away from the school, said Oak Lawn police Division Chief Gerald Vetter.
“There was never a threat made at the school or toward the school,” Vetter said. “It was a safety measure put in place.”
School Superintendent Michael Riordan said the lockdown was implemented after receiving a credible report that a student might be coming to the school with a gun.
“After conducting a room by room search, we determined that the student was not present at school,” Riordan said in a statement.
He said police instructed the school to initiate the lock down as a precautionary measure, which meant students remained in classrooms and nobody was allowed in or out of the building. The school has now resumed regular classes.
Riordan said the school’s police resource officer, detective Pete Hennessy, reported the person was in custody and that the student was not on campus at any time this morning. He expressed thanks to the Oak Lawn police for their proactive action.
“We are grateful to our staff and students for their understanding and cooperation during this stressful experience,” Riordan said in his statement. “And we are most happy to report that no one was injured and our school was safe for everyone.”
