A Bowie High School student was found in possession of “a loaded glock handgun” Tuesday, according to a letter from Principal Joe Kautzer to the high school’s families.
The student was escorted to security because he entered the school improperly through a back door that was propped open, said Prince George’s County Public Schools spokeswoman Meghan Gebreselassie. The student was confronted and searched by school security, according to the letter.

No students or staff were harmed or actively threatened during the incident, Kautzer wrote.
It was not immediately clear whether an arrest was made. The Prince George’s police department deferred questions to the Bowie police department, which is investigating the incident. A spokesman from the Bowie police did not immediately respond to a request from The Washington Post.
“The safety of our students is our top priority,” Kautzer wrote. “Please assist in our efforts to maintain a safe learning environment by discussing with your child acceptable behaviors that support a positive school climate.”
