Mr Farage conceded he “still feel very burnt” by the General Election in 2015, when UKIP secured four million votes but were only elected in one seat.

If he were to run, the former Brexit Party insisted it would be for Reform UK.

But he did not rule out a future deal with the Conservative Party.

The 59-year-old said: “If Reform do well and get a lot of votes and a reasonable representation of seats — and the Tories do very badly — then something very big is coming afterwards.”

Yet Mr Farage it is a far from simple decision on whether to return to frontline politics.

He said: "I honestly don’t know,” he replies, unconvincingly. “Life for me is pretty good. I’ve got a job that I love… I’m earning very good money, which I haven’t done for 30 years. The kids are all grown up… getting back into politics means giving all that up.

       “But maybe, just maybe.”

Reform UK is polling at around 16 per cent and is closing in on the Conservatives.

Former Conservative MP Lee Anderson told the Daily Express: "Nigel Farage is very popular wherever you go in the country. He's got the old rock star appeal, I think Boris had that.

"Look if he came back into frontline politics I'd be absolutely delighted. It would certainly make my job easier to be re-elected.

"It would give the people of this country - the normal, decent, hard-working people that are looking for an alternative - a bit of a lift as well and encourage people to come out and vote whenever the election is."

Tory MPs are said to be so concerned about the threat of Nigel Farage, they are urging Rishi Sunak to make him an ambassador to the US.

A Red Wall Tory told i: “Rishi should do a deal with him to make him ambassador to the US in return for him agreeing not to stand for Reform.

“He already has a great relationship with Donald Trump, he would make an excellent interlocutor between the two countries. Bung him a peerage and make him ambassador is what I would do.”
