Euro 2020 poll: Should Boris announce Bank Holiday to celebrate England reaching final?

Last night the Three Lions secured their place in a major tournament final for the first time in 55 years. Their success at Wembley means the England team will now face Italy in the final on Sunday night for a chance at their first major trophy since 1966. Kick off starts at 8pm, with the England team having the benefit of a roaring home crowd as the final is hosted at Wembley Stadium.

Football fans have called for the Prime Minister to declare a national holiday to honour England's success last night.

Gary Neville, the former England defender, called for a national celebration as he revelled in last night's victory.

He said: “We have never done this before in our lifetimes.

“We have had so much pain, so much dismay and so much let-down, and now we are going to a final.

"For the next few days those lads have got to focus, but we don’t have to.

"This country is absolutely bouncing. National holiday, enjoy yourselves.”

An official Parliament petition has also been launched to call for a Bank Holiday on Monday July 12 if England win the Euros.

The petition reads: "It would be beneficial and sensible to give the country the day off the next day if England wins, in the form of an extra Bank Holiday Monday."

The petition, created by Lee Jones, has already reached over 13,000 signatures - which means the Government will respond.

If over 100,000 signatures are reached, the petition will be considered for debate in Parliament.

For a Bank Holiday to be declared, a Royal Proclamation from the Queen would have to be announced.

Such a suggestion would have to come from Mr Johnson, as the monarch acts on the advice of Ministers.

But it may not be out of the question, as the Prime Minister has enthusiastically supported the England side over the past few weeks.

On Saturday, ahead of the team's quarter final match against Ukraine, Mr Johnson posted a picture of himself standing on a giant England flag outside No10.

He was stood in the centre of the flag and posed with two thumbs up.

The Prime Minister congratulated the players for a "fantastic performance" last night, and called on the team to "bring it home".

Football pundits and fans alike were ecstatic after last night's win, with former England striker Gary Linekar saying the win had "been a long time coming".

The leading commentator added: "It's finally happened. I was doubting I'd ever see it again in my lifetime at one point."

Former England midfielder Karen Carney described Gareth Southgate's squad as "a family" after they celebrated the win in front of almost 60,000 fans at Wembley last night.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, he said: "They are absolutely all together in this moment. I have got goosebumps."
