Labour and SNP vow to boycott new committee as Angela Rayner incandescent with rage

The Deputy Labour leader accused the Conservative Government of "corruption" while political journalist Alex Wickham said that with only Tory MPs sitting on the committee they would be "marking their own homework". Their comments relate to backbench MP Owen Paterson, who sparked outrage when he avoided a suspension this evening.

Last week a standards report found the ex-Environment Secretary repeatedly used his position as an elected official to promote two companies that paid him a combined £112,000 a year.

It ruled that the MP for North Shropshire breached four parts of the MPs’ code of conduct and brought the Commons “into disrepute”.

Mr Paterson has vehemently denied wrongdoing and referenced the "torturous and inadequate" investigation into his wife's suicide.

In an attempt to take another look at standards procedures that MPs abide by and to decide whether Mr Paterson’s report should be “reconsidered”, Downing Street wanted to set up a new body.

This had the backing of Tory MPs but faced stiff opposition from opposing parties.

Ms Rayner tweeted: "Today the Tories voted to give a green light to corruption.

"Labour will not be taking any part in this sham process or any corrupt committee.

"The Prime Minister, Conservative Ministers and MPs have brought shame on our democracy."

Her comments came as Mr Wickham leaked the information online.

He tweeted: "NEW: Senior Labour source confirms they will boycott the new committee

       "SNP also boycotting.

"So it will just be Tory MPs marking their own homework.

       "Oh dear."

Speaking earlier at PMQs - where she stood in for a self-isolating Sir Keir Starmer - Ms Rayner said: "In no other profession in our country could someone be found guilty by an independent process and just have their mates vote them back into the job."

The PM insisted "paid lobbying, paid advocacy in this House is wrong".

But he added: "The issue in this case, which involved a serious family tragedy, is whether a member of this House had a fair opportunity to make representations in this case and whether, as a matter of a natural justice, our procedures in this House allow for proper appeal."

However, Ms Rayner said the move made it clear there was "one rule for them and one for the rest of us".

She said Tories failed to change the rules over MP Rob Roberts who was found by an independent panel to have sexually harassed an employee.

Referring to the misconduct case against the Delyn MP, Ms Rayner added: "When a Conservative member was found guilty of sexual harassment but let off on a loophole, they said the rules could not be changed after the event.

"So they can't change the rules to stop sexual harassment but they can change the rules to allow cash for access."

"Why is the Prime Minister making it up as he goes along?"

Mr Johnson replied: "All the professions that she mentions have a right of appeal. That is what the House needs to consider.”
