Following England's defeat to Italy on penalties in Sunday's Euro 2020 final, violence erupted in London as 49 "thugs" were arrested after 19 police officers were injured in the violence. The Metropolitan Police Federation which represents thousands of officers have now issued a statement condemning the behaviour from a small minority of England fans branding them "thugs not fans" for their conduct towards the police.

On Monday, the Metropolitan Police Federation tweeted their disappointment at Sunday's scenes.

They said: "These people should be ashamed of themselves.

"They are not fans. They are thugs.

"We wish our injured colleagues well."

The Met police also tweeted their sadness at the news.

They said: "Thank you to the tens of thousands of fans who had good spirits and behaved responsibly.

"We made 49 arrests during the day for a variety of offences. We will have officers on hand throughout the night.

"Frustratingly, 19 of our officers were injured while they confronted volatile crowds. This is wholly unacceptable."

While officers warned this "could easily end in injury".

The Football Association (FA) also hit back at the fans for their conduct.

In a statement, they said: "These people are an embarrassment to the England team and to all of the true fans who wanted to enjoy one of the most important matches in our history.

"We will work with the relevant authorities to take action against anyone who is identified to have illegally forced their way into the stadium."

Ugly scenes were caught on camera throughout the day in London's Leicester Square and Trafalgar Square where fans left a broken glass and litter over the streets.

While at Wembley Stadium hundreds of ticketless England fans broke through barriers to try and gain access to the stadium.
