Chicago man denied bail in May shooting that left woman critically wounded

A 31-year-old Chicago man has been charged with aggravated battery in connection with a shooting that left a 28-year-old woman critically wounded, police said.

Karon Brunt was accused of shooting the woman 10 times and denied bail during a court hearing Thursday.

Brunt, of the 6100 block of South Rhodes Avenue, was arrested by a fugitive task force Wednesday in the same block where he lives, according to a statement from Chicago police. He was charged with aggravated battery and discharging a firearm.

Police say Brunt was allegedly involved in a May 23 shooting in Park Manor. A woman was in the 7300 block of South Prairie Avenue around 1:30 a.m. with friends when she was approached by a man, who she later identified as Brunt. The man engaged her in conversation, and when she noticed he had a gun in his waistband, she entered her car.

While she was getting into the vehicle, the man shot her 10 times. She was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.

The state’s attorney argued Brunt should be held without bail because he has multiple previous charges involving unlawful use of a firearm, including one pending charge. After the May shooting in Chicago, he was arrested in Atlanta in June for possession of controlled substances.

The state argued Brunt is “clearly a danger to the community,” and should not be released on bail.

Zaid Abdallah, Brunt’s attorney, said Brunt works construction with his father and supports five children, and has another child on the way. He argued that one person identifying Brunt was not enough to deny him bail.

But the judge said because of Brunt’s history of weapon-related offenses, and the number of times he allegedly shot the victim, he should be held without bail and have no contact with the victim.

Brunt’s bond will be reviewed Wednesday.
