Explosions heard in Kiev as Russia advances on capital

Explosions were heard in Kiev during the early hours of Friday, with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky confirming that the Russian assault resumed at 4 am local time.

Ukraine’s foreign minister said the capital is experiencing a new barrage of “horrific” rocket strikes and compared the attack to the 1941 Nazi Germany invasion.

Russian forces are inching closer towards Kiev, a senior US defence official has warned, amid fighting at Hostomel airport just outside the capital, and the loss of Chernobyl, 100km to the north, to Vladimir Putin’s forces on Thursday evening.

Mr Zelensky earlier said his country has been “left alone” to defend itself, as Moscow launched a full-scale military offensive that left over 137 Ukrainians, including soldiers, dead on the first day.

Ukraine’s military says Moscow has already moved more than 60 battalion tactical groups across the border – each with roughly 700-900 troops.

CCTV cameras earlier caught Russian military vehicles rolling through border force checkpoints as ground troops crossed the Crimea border into Ukraine.

US President Joe Biden has announced harsh new sanctions coordinated with allies in the UK and EU. “Putin is the aggressor. Putin chose this war. And now he and his country will bear the consequences,” Mr Biden said.

1645765243 Prioritise protection of civilians, UN chief says

UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres on Friday said the protection of civilians must be "priority number one" amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

He asked for the international humanitarian and human rights law to be upheld.

"With the death toll rising, we are seeing images of fear, anguish and terror in every corner of Ukraine," Mr Guterres wrote on Twitter.

Earlier on Thursday, following Vladimir Putin's declaration of war, Mr Guterres said it was the "saddest moment" of his tenure as the secretary-general of the UN.

"I started this meeting of the Security Council addressing president Putin and telling him from the bottom of my heart: Stop your troops from an offensive against Ukraine, give peace a chance because too many people have died,” he told reporters.

Meanwhile, The UN announced it is immediately allocating $20 million (£14 million) to scale up humanitarian operations in Ukraine.

1645763842 Kiev hit by 'horrific' new wave of missile strikes - minister

Ukraine’s foreign minister says Kiev is experiencing a new barrage of “horrific” rocket strikes on Friday morning, after loud explosions were heard across the city and an alleged Russian aircraft was downed in the capital.

Following the explosions in Kiev, Ukraine’s foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba said the last time the capital experienced anything like this was in 1941 when it was attacked by Nazi Germany.

“Ukraine defeated that evil and will defeat this one. Stop Putin. Isolate Russia. Severe all ties. Kick Russia out of everywhere,” he tweeted.

Ukrainian forces said they had downed the enemy aircraft over Kiev, which then crashed into a residential building and set it on fire, according to Anton Herashchenko, an adviser to the interior minister.

It was unclear whether the aircraft was manned or whether it could be a missile. Kiev municipal authorities said at least eight people were injured when the object crashed into an apartment block.
