Angela Rayner asked about 'honeymoon period' on GMB
KEMI Badenoch has slammed Angela Rayner’s decision to build 1.5 million “ugly homes” in England.
Ministers could also decide where new homes should be built and force councils to release parts of the green belt for development if they fail to meet new housing targets, under Labour’s plans.
Shadow housing secretary Mrs Badenoch bemoaned Labour’s move to drop the requirement for new homes to be “beautiful”.
The Tory leadership hopeful warned the requirement previously introduced by her party “means so much to local communities” and people “deserve to live in beautiful homes”.
Mrs Badenoch said: “She’s already let slip she’s ditching the requirement to ensure that beauty is a key part of housing – something that I was actually very proud the previous Conservative government put at the heart of our planning reforms because local people do want beautiful housing.
“So now she’s telling us she’s going to be replacing what they want with a requirement to meet 1.5 million ugly houses instead.

“Why on earth would they take out something which means so much to local communities? People deserve to live in beautiful homes and the fact that the Labour Party doesn’t care about that shows exactly how they’re going to develop their policies.”
Mrs Badneoch also claimed the changes proposed by Labour would result in the “worst of all worlds” by not addressing the “basic economics” of housebuilding and “centralising decision-making”.
Deputy Prime Minister Ms Rayner defended the changes and insisted the Government will build “beautiful” homes.
Labour’s manifesto previously outlined its aim for “exemplary” development to be “the norm not the exception”.
Ms Rayner insisted she “will not hesitate” to intervene in areas that fail to build enough as she released swathes of the green belt for development.
Under her plan, councils that do not provide enough homes will be made to build on low quality “grey belt” land, such as disused car parks, in the green belt.
Tory former cabinet minister Kit Malthouse urged Ms Rayner to confirm protections would exist for national landscapes and designated areas of outstanding natural beauty (AONBs).

Ms Rayner said:“I think it’s very important and, again, what we’re saying in terms of the release of the grey belt is that it has to be for the benefit of local, natural spaces.”
Labour announced proposals to overhaul the planning system in the Commons yesterday (TUES) as the government seeks to build 1.5 million homes over the next five years.
She also revealed new figures showing that only 200,000 homes are due to be built this year after the Conservatives watered down planning rules in response to a revolt from Tory backbenchers.
Labour has committed to reinstating mandatory house-building targets on local authorities in an effort to ensure that they provide enough land for development.

Ms Rayner said some areas might get what seems like "a surprising target" under new house building requirements.
North East and North West England will see a 99% and 75% rise in house building targets, respectively.
London is the only region to see its target downgraded.
James Cleverly criticised the Government’s approach to housebuilding after Ms Rayner said London would have a target of 80,000 new homes a year.

Mr Cleverly, the Tory leadership contender, suggested the number was not high enough.
He tweeted: “We need to build more homes in urban areas like London, massively increasing densification.
“Labour would rather concrete over the greenbelt than make Sadiq Khan do his job.”
