Storage and waste experts are urging UK households to prepare with nearly one in every 10 Brits facing having their bin collections cut.

       Councils looking to make ends meet across the country are reported to be looking at reducing the frequency of black bin collections, as the Express reported this week, which could see as many as five million people left with worse collections.

       Bristol City Council is the first to announce it is consulting on changing black bin collections to just once a month, while Carmathenshire in Wales and East Ayrshire in Scotland are also considering the change, with as many as 42 councils weighing up reductions.

       Now, storage expert Sarah Day of Pay Less For Storage has issued advice for households set to be affected by bin collection cuts.

       She said: “If you have a garden, then home composting is a reliable and hygienic way to rid yourself of organic kitchen waste.

       “A composting system can mean you don’t need to leave food waste such as fruit and vegetable peelings or coffee grounds rotting in your bin for a month, waiting for collection.

       “It will decrease waste going to landfill, help you avoid unpleasant smells, and ensure you have excellent compost for your plants this summer.

       “Get to grips with your current recycling regulations and understand how to separate materials and what can and can't be recycled.

       “Make sorting and separating recycling easier with stackable recycling storage bins for metal, plastics and paper. Taking these items out of your household waste should reduce it significantly.

       “Provide veg box services where you can return the box. Whenever you’re shopping, remember that once you purchase an item with unnecessary packaging, it becomes your responsibility to dispose of it.

       “And it may sound obvious, but always use reusable shopping bags. Keep them in your car boot or by the door so they’re easily accessible and front of mind when you head out to the shops.”

       She added: "While it may all sound like a massive headache, there are some effective household waste management plans you can put in place now to lessen the impact of these changes.

       "Proper waste storage solutions will be key to keeping your rubbish organised, keeping things hygienic and preventing pests.

       "Investing in stackable recycling bins, where you can sort separate materials without making a mess. Air-tight food waste caddies and compostable waste bags can all help keep smells and spills at bay.”
