One of the richest countries in the world with no rivers and huge oil reserves

There are many wealthy countries in the world, but very few can claim they have no rivers or lakes.

However, what this country lacks in water, it certainly makes up for it with huge oil reserves.

The country in question is Saudi Arabia, one of the richest nations globally.

Despite its desert terrain and scarce rainfall, the Kingdom has developed innovative methods to meet its water needs.

The Ministry of Water and Electricity manages all water-related issues, relying heavily on aquifers and desalination.

Aquifers, large underground reservoirs, were mapped extensively in the 1970s, leading to the drilling of thousands of deep wells.

Additionally, Saudi Arabia is the world's largest producer of desalinated water, with 27 desalination plants operated by the Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC).

These facilities produce over three million cubic meters of potable water daily, supplying more than 70% of urban water needs.

The country also captures surface water through over 200 dams, collecting around 16 billion cubic feet of runoff annually.

This water supports agriculture via extensive irrigation systems. Moreover, Saudi Arabia recycles up to 40% of domestic wastewater for irrigation in urban parks and farms.

While it lacks rivers, Saudi Arabia holds the second-largest proven oil reserves in the world, estimated at 267 billion barrels.

According to data from World Atlas, the Kingdom is the third-largest oil producer globally, with an average output of 12.14 million barrels per day.

Its oil wealth has driven rapid economic growth, transforming it into the largest economy in the Middle East and a key player in the global energy market.

Saudi Arabia’s economy is categorised as high-income by the World Bank and is the only Arab country in the G20.

It ranks high on the Human Development Index, offering free university education, universal healthcare, and no personal income tax.

The country also hosts the world's third-largest immigrant population, with about half its citizens under the age of 25.

Nonetheless, the country is not without its issues. It has previously been criticised for its stance on human rights including issues surrounding the LGBTQ+ community.
