But shocked workers contacted police after discovering a glass jar with human remains inside on Monday.

       Merseyside Police said "Officers attended and located a jar containing preserved human remains at the property."

       A spokesman said the "provenance and age" of the remains was as yet unknown, and it had not been established whether any crime had been committed.

       The house has now been cordoned off to allow investigations.
