On Friday, the United Nations Security Council extended a transnational aid operation for Syrians from Turkey. US Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield hailed the resolution as a life saving action.

       She tweeted: “Today, millions of Syrians can breathe a small sigh of relief: vital humanitarian aid will continue to flow into Syria through the Bab al-Hawa border crossing for another year. This will save countless lives.”

       In a separate tweet Ms Thomas-Greenfield stressed the importance of the deal in the historical context of a worldwide pandemic.

       She added: “This is an important moment for the people of Syria, for the global pandemic response, and for the UN Security Council, which has shown we can come together to tackle complex challenges and deliver for people in need.

       “A lot of work we need to do in the weeks and months to come.”

       The decision was approved in a unanimous vote by the 15-member Security Council.

       Russia's UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said the move showed both nations were able to work together and aligned with the US President and his Russian counterpart’s previous discussions.

       He told reporters: “We hope that it might be a turning point that is indeed in line with what Putin and Biden discussed in Geneva.

       “It demonstrates that we can cooperate when there is a need and when there is a will as well.”

       It comes after Japan taunted its good relations with the US but issued a warning about Russia’s “exercising”.
