SIBU: Educationists have been told to assist students who are lagging in their studies, especially those who were badly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

       Speaking at the presentation of Excellent Service Award to 110 teachers under the Sarikei District Education office, Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon urged teachers to understand the difficulties faced by these students who are now trying to make headway in their lessons.

       “During this Covid-19 pandemic period, I hope all educators will seize the chance to understand the situation, to help students to catch up on their studies.

       “In fact, the ministry has come up with two plans for next year which aim to meet this achievement (helping weak students who are affected by the pandemic),” he said.

       Dr Mah also emphasised that educationists play an important role in efforts to produce human capital development among the younger generation for Malaysia.

       “We want to produce specialists that can shape the country.

       “So make it a responsibility as educationists to fulfil this role,” he added.

       Likewise, Mah also stressed that parents also had a part to play by motivating their children to study.

       “My advice to the parents is that they have an important role to play to motivate and see to the needs of their children’s education,” Dr Mah added at the ceremony.

       The event also saw the presentation of certificates of appreciation to a total of 28 retirees from the department.

       Among those at the function were the director of Sarawak Education Department, Dr Norisah Suhaili and Lau Ngie Tung, the Sarikei District Education Department head.
