Sir Michael Caine has revealed an unexpected gardening trick that convinced him to give up on Hollywood - and it involves daffodil bulbs and a fridge.
The legendary actor, now 91, has long had a passion for gardening, having spent years tending to the grounds of his homes in Oxfordshire and Surrey.
But back in 2023 he told The Guardian that when he lived in Los Angeles, he was given some surprising advice about growing his favourite flowers.
“I was told that if I wanted to grow daffodils, I’d need to put the bulbs in the fridge for a fortnight,” Caine said. “That was it - final straw!”

The revelation was one of several factors that led him to sell his home in California and return to Britain.
Having grown up in the UK, where daffodils bloom naturally in spring, he was stunned to learn that growing them in the warmer climate of Los Angeles required an artificial winter.
The idea of refrigerating bulbs to trick them into flowering seemed absurd to him. Despite his frustration, he admitted that he followed the advice - and it worked.
Caine, who reportedly now lives in London’s Chelsea Harbour, developed his love for gardening as a child after being evacuated to the countryside during World War II.

He recalled spending time in rural Norfolk, where he discovered a passion for plants.
Now settled in the UK, Caine previously said he has no regrets about leaving Hollywood behind, preferring the comforts of home over the glitz of Los Angeles.
When asked whether he worries about the future back in 2023, Caine brushed it off in typical fashion.
“I’m 90,” he said. “I don’t worry about the future. I worry if I’m gonna make it to lunch.”
