KUCHING: Sarawak registered a new record high of 2,992 Covid-19 cases on Thursday (Sept 2), taking the state's cumulative tally to 121,964.

The death toll also rose to 540 after seven new fatalities were recorded, the state disaster management committee said.

The latest deaths were two men and five women aged from 40 to 81 years.

All had various comorbidities including hypertension, diabetes, stroke and heart disease, said the committee in a statement.

Of the new cases, nearly half or 1,342 were in Kuching.

It added that six districts recorded triple-digit figures ranging from 105 to 282 while another 29 districts had between one and 93 cases each.

"A total of 2,986 or 99.8% of the cases are in Category One (asymptomatic) and Category Two (mild symptoms).

"There is one case in Category Three (symptomatic with lung infection), two cases in Category Four (symptomatic and requiring oxygen) and three cases in Category Five (symptomatic and requiring ventilator)," said the committee.

It also said three new community clusters were detected in Subis, Kuching and Sri Aman.

Another five new workplace clusters were identified, comprising one in Serian and two each in Kuching and Bintulu.

There are currently 137 active clusters in the state.
