KOTA KINABALU: Two motorcyclists were killed following a collision along the Inderasabah road in Tawau district on Monday (Jan 24).

The victims - a fisherman and his trader wife, both 29 - were on the motorcycle heading towards an oil palm estate prior to the 1.50pm mishap.

Tawau OCPD Asst Comm Peter Umbuas said the accident was believed to have occurred when a car crashed into the duo when trying to overtake some vehicles in the opposite lane.

“The driver of a vehicle was believed to be trying to overtake two cars and while attempting, could not avoid the motorcyclists in the opposite direction,” he said in a statement.

He said the driver tried to swerve to avoid hitting the motorcyclists but failed.

“The motorcyclists were thrown about 14m from where they collided,” ACP Peter said.

He said the woman died on the spot while the man succumbed to his injuries while receiving emergency treatment at the hospital.

The driver of the vehicle and his passenger were unhurt in the mishap.

The driver has been detained to facilitate investigations into this case for causing death due to reckless and dangerous driving.
