The Met Office has issued two yellow warnings on Tuesday in Inverness and some parts of London. Inverness will face frequent snow showers and icy stretches, leading to some travel disruption, particularly for higher routes.

       The weather conditions may impact the roads and railways journeys due to the icy patches.

       The department has further issued a warning that each of the nine regions of England will experience cold weather from midnight on Tuesday 4 January to midday on Thursday 6 January.

       The Friday warning is for sleet and snow showers covering the north-west of England and western parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

       It could mean difficult driving conditions and disruption to travel.

       Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Andy Page, said: “A cold northerly flow will be bringing a drop in temperature to most of the UK for the next few days, particularly when compared with the recent mild weather.

       “Wednesday night will see a sharp frost across most of the UK, with temperatures dropping below freezing across much of the country.”

       According to weather experts, snow will accumulate above 1,000 ft (305m) across the Pennines, and the Scottish Highlands on Friday.

       Dave Bowers, Senior Meteorologist at accuweather.com told Express.co.uk: “One to three inches (3-8 cm) of snow is expected to accumulate above 1,000 ft (305 m) across the northern mountains in Wales, the Pennines and the Scottish Highlands.

       Three to six inches (8-15 cm) of snow is expected to accumulate across the western Scottish Highlands.

       “A front will sweep west to east across the United Kingdom Thursday bringing periods of rain at lower elevations and snow in the mountains along with gusty winds Thursday morning.”

       The UKHSA has also extended the cold weather alert to the whole of England.

       The health agency has encouraged people to stay warm inside and look out for those most at risk from the effects of cold weather.

       Agostinho Sousa, a Consultant in Public Health Medicine at UKHSA, said: “Cold weather can have a serious impact on health, particularly for older people and those with heart and lung problems, as it increases the risks of heart attacks, strokes and chest infections.

       “It’s important to check on those who are more vulnerable to cold weather, including older neighbours or relatives – especially those living alone or those who have serious illness.”
