GEORGE TOWN: A Myanmar national was arrested for allegedly using the identity of another person to receive his Covid-19 vaccination at the Retail Industry Vaccination (RiVAC) programme in Gurney Paragon Mall.

OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong said the suspect was arrested on Thursday (Sept 9) after a 44-year-old Myanmar national lodged a police report on Sept 6.

"The complainant went to the vaccination centre (PPV) in Tapak Pesta Sungai Nibong to get his vaccination only to find out that his name and passport number had been registered at RiVAC in Gurney Paragon Mall," ACP Soffian said in a statement on Friday (Sept 10).

He said the complainant was told by the staff at the RiVAC PPV that his name was recorded as having received the first dose of Covid-19 vaccine on Aug 20, with a second dose scheduled for Sept 9.

ACP Soffian said the complainant, suspecting that his identity had been used by another to get vaccinated, lodged a report at the Sungai Nibong police station.

Acting on the report, ACP Soffian said a team from the Pulau Tikus police station, with assistance from security guards at the RiVAC PPV, detained the suspect, aged 45.

He said during the arrest, police seized several documents including an identity card, belonging to the complainant.

The case will be investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and Section 6 (3) of the Immigration Act for not having valid travel documents.
