IPOH: Police have arrested 92 youths for illegal racing under 'Op Selamat' carried out at multiple 'mat rempit' (illegal motorcycle racers) hotspots early Sunday (May 1).
Ipoh district police chief ACP Yahaya Hassan said in the 1am operation, police hauled up 89 men and three women aged from 15 to 26 in Pasir Puteh here.
"The operation was carried out following complaints and tip-offs by members of the public on illegal racing and reckless riding," he said at a press conference here on Sunday.
Police also seized 14 motorcycles for various offences such as illegal modifications and using fake registration numbers, among others.
He said seven individuals were detained for reckless driving under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act while two others tested positive for drugs and are being investigated under Section 3(1) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952.
A total of 241 summonses were issued for various offences such as driving without a valid licence and beating the red light, involving school and higher learning institution's students. – Bernama
