KUALA LUMPUR: The Immigration Department conducted a raid at a private university in Semenyih and nabbed 33 undocumented foreigners working illegally there.
Immigration director-general Datuk Seri Khairul Dzaimee Daud said the foreigners were working as cleaners and gardeners at the university.
“The operation on Monday (March 7) started at 11am involving 28 officers.
“A total of 40 foreigners were inspected and we detained 27 Indonesians, four Pakistanis, a Bangladeshi and a Nepali.
He said during the raid, some suspects attempted to flee by climbing a nearby hill while others working as cleaners changed out of their uniforms into casual clothes.
“However, we managed to see through their ruse,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (March 9).
Khairul said initial investigations show that the suspects had been working there for about two years and did not have any identification documents or work passes.
“The company that employed these workers did not apply for temporary visit passes for them.
“We will investigate the case further,” he said.
Khairul said offences committed include not having identification documents, overstaying and violating passes requirements.
“Those detained have been taken to the Immigration depot in Bukit Jalil,” he added.
