'Impound their vehicles' Fury as travellers set up camp on school playing field

A large number of caravans arrived on land belonging to Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, on Tuesday night despite the height barrier being closed. The school says it is working with authorities to remove the group.

But those living in the town, which is just outside the tranquil Peak District, fear the travellers will leave litter and even human waste. This was the case after a similar encampment next to the school's sixth form centre almost exactly three years ago, Derbyshire Live reports.

"It’s the filth they leave behind," one mum posted on Facebook.

"Impound all their vehicles," another post reads.

A third reads: "Just don’t leave a trail of destruction for the taxpayers to pick the cost up."

Another states: "I hope for everyone’s sake they don’t leave their human excrement and soiled wipes everywhere."

More than 1,300 youngsters are due back at the school, rated as Good by Ofsted, on September 7 after the summer holidays.

Scott Garrity, head teacher, said: "We are working with the relevant authorities to rectify and remove the group of people who have accessed our school fields.

"Thank you to the members of the public who were quick to alert us to the problem."

The school is believed to be working with the police and the Conservative-run Derbyshire Dales District Council to resolve the issue.
