PETALING JAYA: There has been a downward trend in most major Covid-19 indicators compared with last week, says Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

“Compared with the previous week, there is a drop of 13.1% in new Covid-19 cases. The average number of cases has reduced by 7% from 70,829 cases to 65,573, and the decline in the number of active cases has been consistent over the nine weeks,” said the Health director-general.

However, Dr Noor Hisham said the number of cases requiring treatment in intensive care units (ICU) has increased by 2%.

“The number of deaths has reduced by 27.2% and the cases requiring respiratory assistance did not show a significant change and remained at 214 cases.

“As of Nov 6, the daily infectivity rate in Malaysia has reduced from 0.96 to 0.91 on Nov 1,” he said in a statement on Monday (Nov 8).

Dr Noor Hisham also urged school authorities to pay attention to the safety and health of students and the school’s environment to prevent any Covid-19 outbreaks.

“This is because it can result in a more widespread infection among students, teachers, staff in educational institutions and also to their families and in turn, the community,” he said.

“Everyone including school authorities, parents, school bus drivers, students and those who are involved in school reopening activities, must do their part in following the standard operating procedures to prevent education clusters from emerging,” he added.

Dr Noor Hisham said as of Monday (Nov 8), another 4,543 new Covid-19 cases were recorded for a cumulative total of 2,510,852.

He said six new clusters were detected, bringing the number of active clusters to 314.

“Out of the new infections, 15 are imported and 4,528 are local cases. Some 112 patients fall under Categories 3, 4 and 5 with the remaining 4,431 cases under Categories 1 and 2.

“A total of 7,348 patients have recovered. There are 534 warded in ICU with 263 of them needing respiratory assistance,” he said.
