Chicago will have a fireworks show for Independence Day weekend the night of July 3.
According to an announcement Friday as part of Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s “Open Chicago” initiative, the fireworks will begin at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday night. It will be a high-altitude show, with fireworks exploding higher in the air. According to the announcement, it should be visible along the lakefront from Grand Avenue to the north to 55th Street to the south.
WBBM Newsradio 780 AM & 105.9 FM will provide a music simulcast, broadcasting a music soundtrack to accompany the fireworks display.
In the last several weeks, Lightfoot had hinted a show was coming — this was after Navy Pier announced it would not host its usual show over Independence Day weekend for the second year in a row.
“Putting on a grandiose fireworks display to celebrate both our city’s reopening and Independence Day is an excellent way to kick off the summer we’ve all been waiting for,” Lightfoot said in Friday’s statement. “Thanks to the hard work of our residents, who followed public health guidelines and did their part to slow and stop the spread of COVID-19, we are now able to bring back exciting summer traditions like these. As our newly reopened city continues adapting to a new normal, I want to urge our residents to continue getting vaccinated so we can bring back even more of our favorite outdoor events.”
