Cleddau Bridge: One dead after 52-seat bus crashes into car on bridge leaving driver trapped & 10 passengers injured

       A PERSON has died and passengers injured after a 52-seater bus crashed into a car on a bridge.

       Multiple passengers were feared injured as the driver was "severely trapped" when the horror unfolded on Cleddau Bridge in Pembrokeshire Tuesday afternoon.

       Dyfed-Powys Police tonight confirmed the incident was "now a fatal one".

       A force spokeswoman said: "The collision involved a car and a coach. Sadly, one person has died.

       "Next of kin have been advised and are being supported by officers."

       She told how one person was hospitalised in a critical condition while "a number of passengers" were taken to hospital with "various levels of injuries".

       Photos this evening showed damage to the coach, which appeared to be operated by a private firm.

       The Welsh Conservatives leader Andrew RT Davies tonight posted on X, formerly known as Twitter: "I’m deeply saddened to learn that somebody tragically lost their life in today’s accident on the Cleddau Bridge.

       "My thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies go out to their family, friends and loved ones."

       The fire service, ambulance crews and cops rushed to the scene around 2.15pm.

       The bus driver was trapped in the vehicle with a multi-agency response ongoing.

       Ambulance crews confirmed 10 people were taken to hospital.

       Dyfed-Powys Police was also on the scene and confirmed road closures were in place while they dealt with the chaos.

       Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews responded to a road traffic collision involving one 52-seater bus and one private motor vehicle.

       "Crews extricated a severely trapped driver who was then taken to hospital by Air Ambulance.

       "Several of the bus passengers suffered with various injuries and many of them were taken to hospital by road ambulances and police vehicles.

       "This was declared a major incident but it has since been stood down.

       "Road traffic collision equipment, HGV platform and trauma packs were all extensively used throughout this incident.

       "Some crews left the scene 4.16pm, with others remaining at the scene to further assist the Police."

       Ambulance crews said: "We were called today, Tuesday 5 September, at approximately 2.14pm, to reports of a road traffic collision on the A477.

       "We sent five emergency ambulances, one duty operations manager, one Cymru High Acuity Response Unit and non-emergency patient transport service vehicles to the scene.

       "We were supported by colleagues from the Wales Air Ambulance.

       "We transferred one patient to University Hospital of Wales, and a further nine patients to Withybush hospital for further treatment."

       Dyfed Powys Police added: "Police are in attendance at a road traffic collision which occurred on the A477 near the Cleddau Bridge, Pembroke Dock at about 2.15pm today, Tuesday, September 5th.

       "The A477 is currently closed between the Honeyborough roundabout and the Pembroke roundabout and road users are advised to take an alternative route."

       Crews from Pembroke Dock, Milford Haven, Haverfordwest, Tenby and Narberth crews were deployed along with the Air Ambulance.

       The local hospital urged people not to attend A&E unless absolutely necessary as they attend to those involved in the accident.

       Hywel Dda health board said: "We’re asking people to only attend A&E at Withybush Hospital if you have a life-threatening illness or serious injury, such as: severe breathing difficulties; severe pain or bleeding; chest pain or a suspected stroke or serious trauma injuries."

       Wales' First Minister Mark Drakeford said his thoughts were with those involved.

       Posting on X, he said: "Worrying to hear news of a major incident on the Cleddau Bridge.
