A former Advocate Condell Medical Center nurse was arrested at her Lake County home Tuesday and charged with reckless conduct after authorities said she endangered the safety of a patient who had been in her care, Libertyville Police Department officials said in a news release Wednesday.

Geneva Wright, 32, of Grayslake, is charged with reckless conduct and was free on bail, as of Wednesday. The alleged incident happened in March and, following an investigation, a warrant was issued for her arrest Tuesday, the release states. The patient died, but Wright is not charged with the death.

“Even though the nurse’s criminal conduct did not cause the patient’s death, her actions violated the sacred trust that all of us place in our health care providers: ‘to, first, do no harm.’ Ms. Wright appears to have inserted her own agenda into the solemn end-of-life decision-making process that confronts so many families,” Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said in the release.

Advocate Condell officials told Pioneer Press in a statement that once they became aware of the situation, an internal investigation was launched. Wright was fired from the hospital, located in Libertyville, after she allegedly admitted to her actions.

Medical center officials also said that regardless of the nurse’s intent, her actions were not justified and violated the hospital’s protocol.

“Nothing is more important to us than safety and we wholeheartedly believe our team members come to work every day to do the right thing and to serve our patients with compassion and respect,” the statement reads.

Wright could not be immediately reached for comment.

The investigation of Wright began in March after police were notified by hospital officials of an incident involving the nurse and the patient who was in her care. The examination involved the Libertyville Police Department , Advocate Condell, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Lake County Coroner’s Office, the police news release states.

Authorities declined to provide further details of the situation.

However, Rinehart said in the police release, “Our office will be advocating for new laws that strengthen protections for vulnerable patients in this type of situation.”

Bond was set at $20,000 for Wright, and she was released after posting $2,000..

Wright is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 26 in Waukegan, according to the Libertyville police release.
