The Valdai Discussion Club will hold an expert discussion about the international challenges in 2017 together with the presentation of the report titled "International challenges-2017. Forecast of threats to international security and stability ", prepared by the "Foreign policy" analytical agency.

We are entering the first year of a new era, where the West is no longer the undisputed global leader. However, the consequence of the old order breaking brings the unbearable uncertainty. Shocks of 2016 would be enough for a decade, and in 2017 the world will live with a hope that major surprises are left behind.

Last year was successful for Russia's foreign policy. In 2017 it will be important to maintain the positive dynamics in the Transatlantic region, Greater Eurasia and in the Middle East. For this it is necessary to ignore provocations, primarily in the European theater. A new crisis may be caused by NATO countries, desperate by lack of attention to them from the US, or by the so-called allies of Russia. Following the US, Russia informally begins to give security guarantees to countries, which are in sympathy with Moscow. This can encourage Serbia to take active steps in Kosovo or in Serbian Krajina, and Syria – to be more intransigent during peace talks. Unlikely but still possible collapse of Ukraine should not cause excessive reaction from Russia.

Authors of the report analyze twelve cases, which in 2017 may have a significant impact on the interests of Russia in the sphere of security and stability. The experts focus on the scenarios of the future Russian-American relations. They also cover trends in Ukrainian, Afghan, Iraqi and Syrian crises, scenarios for future evolution of BRICS and the EU, prospects of removing anti-Russian sanctions, and deepening relations between Russia and Japan.
