Conservatives fear Labour and the Lib Dems will elect a Lib Dem Deputy Speaker. (Image: Getty )
Conservative sources have expressed fear they "could become irrelevant" in the new Parliament if Labour and the Lib Dems collaborate to put their people in key positions to "bulldoze" Bills through the Commons.
The position of Speaker in the House of Commons is held by Sir Lindsay Hoyle who was returned to Parliament as an MP following the July 4th election.

Sir Lindsay was previously a Labour MP but must resign when taking the role of Speaker which is a politically neutral position.
However, the key roles of deputy speaker are currently empty after the previous holders stepped down before voters went to the ballot box.
The Telegraph reports the Conservatives believe they should be allocated two deputy speakers, out of three possible positions on offer in the Speakers Office.

However, there are fears now among the Conservatives that Labour and Lib Dem MPs will work together to fill speaker positions with Lib Dems.
Rumblings on the Conservative benches worry if Labour and the Lib Dems dominate the Speaker's Office they will have too much control over choosing which amendments put forward to legislation are debated and voted on.
A senior Conservative MP told The Telegraph: “It’s not just a precarious time for us, it’s a perilous time. This is not just about who sits in the chair, it’s about how Parliament operates – it’s about Bills, legislation and amendments.
“The Conservatives could become irrelevant if the Government just bulldozes legislation through. Of course, Labour has a huge majority, and that limits how effective we can be, but we still have a constitutional role to play in providing an effective opposition.”

As the party of a majority Government Labour are guaranteed the most powerful of the three deputy speaker jobs, and Conservatives believe to maintain balance in the chamber a Tory candidate should take the two jobs which are left.
However, because Conservative MP numbers are down considerably any candidate will also need support from Labour MPs to get elected.

Voting is due to take place in the week beginning July 22 after the official State Opening of Parliament by King Charles III on July 17.
Another Conservative source told the Telegraph: “We should be narrowing down our candidate list, but the party is in disarray at the moment – we can’t even run our own internal elections properly.”
The Conservative Party is still wrangling over who should be appointed to the powerful 1922 Committee, which must be selected before a leadership contest can begin as the committee decides the rules of the contest.
