Jailed for faking identity

       KOTA KINABALU: A foreign woman has been jailed a year after admitting to using a copy of another person’s MyKad to get two doses of a Covid-19 vaccine in Lahad Datu.

       The accused pleaded guilty at a Magistrate’s Court to three charges under Regulations 25 (1) (e) and (o) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007) of using and possessing other people’s identity cards.

       Lahad Datu Magistrate Ryan Sagirann Rayner Jr sentenced her to one-year imprisonment for each charge and ordered the sentences to run concurrently from the date of arrest – Nov 16.

       The woman was not named.

       The offence under the regulation provides for imprisonment not exceeding three years or a fine not more than RM20,000, or both.

       According to the court documents, the woman had used the copy of a My Kad belonging to one “Marujum binti Pengiran” on Aug 17 and Sept 7 this year to obtain her first and second doses of the Covid-19 vaccine at the Lahad Datu vaccination centre.

       The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Mohd Naser Mohd Nadzeri with Nurul Fariza Abdullah, while the accused was represented by counsel Muhammad Abdul Karim.

       According to a Sabah National Registration Department official here, the foreign woman was arrested on Nov 16 when she turned up at its Lahad Datu office to verify the identity card.

       The age of the woman and her country of origin are still under investigation.
