JEMPOL: A 21-year-old man from Bahau in search of a job has been cheated of almost RM100,000 in an online scam here.
“He contacted an individual on a number listed in a Facebook advertisement on Nov 6 and was given details about the job,” said Jempol OCPD Supt Hoo Chang Hook
“The victim was told to click on another link to download an application on Amazon Go,” he said, adding the victim had to register a personal account on the app.
Supt Hoo said the victim was told that he would have to first pay for items advertised on the site and in return be paid a commission for it.
The victim, who currently takes harvesting and fertilising contracts at oil palm plantations, would only receive the refund for his money and commission after having made 60 purchases but could monitor the sales and commission online.
The victim started work that day. He was also told to make the payments into three bank accounts.
Supt Hoo said apart from using his savings, the victim had also borrowed RM25,000 from his sister to pay for the purchases.
“After having made purchases over a three-day period, the victim was told that he would receive a total of RM147,433. It would be credited into his account.
“However, the so-called customer service agent then told him that he would have to pay a RM20,000 processing fee,” he added.
Supt Hoo said preliminary investigations revealed that the three accounts into which the victim had earlier banked the money into were also used for other online scams.
