Oak Park firefighters Tuesday morning were battling an extra-alarm blaze that is believed to have originated in the 1000 block of Lake Street, which has since been closed to traffic.

Village of Oak Park officials said the commercial fire is thought to have ignited at Delia’s Kitchen, a restaurant at 1034 Lake St. Heavy smoke and flames were visible as crews worked to battle the blaze.

The fire first was reported at 9:39 a.m. About an hour later, Oak Park spokesman David Powers said the fire was still active in and near the restaurant.

“Additional businesses on Lake Street, including Chase Bank and Lake Theater, have been evacuated as well as residents from the two apartments above” the restaurant.

Powers said all members of the fire department had been called to the scene.

“Several blocks of Lake Street are closed,” he said.

Morgan Sliz, manager at Ten Thousand Villages gift shop on Marion Street in Oak Park, said crews continued to try to get the fire under control around 11:45 a.m.

“They have a few blocks of Lake Street blocked off. When I got here, all the fire trucks and police were lining up, and they’re still there ... It was billowing black smoke for an hour, but now it’s white,” Sliz said shortly before noon.

She said police had not blocked off the area around her shop on Marion Street — despite the closure or nearby Lake Street. Sliz also said she saw fire trucks from as far away as Cicero.
