A man was charged with first-degree murder Saturday in the fatal stabbing of a Maryland graduate student who was walking in the Loop a week ago, authorities said.
Tony Robinson, 41, is also linked to another attack on June 13 in the first block of East Congress Parkway, where Chicago police said he struck a 50-year-old woman in the head and robbed her. In total, he is charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery with a dangerous weapon and three counts of aggravated battery.
Robinson, whose home address is listed as in the Loop, was arrested Thursday in the 300 block of South Lower Wacker Drive, close to where he allegedly killed 31-year-old Anat Kimchi. About 4 p.m. a week ago, he allegedly approached Kimchi from behind in the 400 block of South Wacker Drive and stabbed her three times, police said.
Kimchi, a University of Maryland criminology doctoral student, was taken by ambulance in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. After the stabbing, police had said a man who Kimchi did not know emerged from a nearby park, grabbed her by her backpack and began stabbing her with a knife about 6 to 7 inches long.

Police later said a “possibly homeless” man was identified in the slaying along with two other Loop attacks, including the robbery of the 50-year-old as well as another person who they said was struck from behind by an object on the evening of June 10 in the 500 block of South Franklin Street. But police have not said if Robinson is also suspected in the last attack.
Robinson was scheduled to appear in bond court at noon Saturday.
