'Knackered’ Postman who left 72-year-old lying on floor after slipping on ice sacked

Thomas McCafferty arrived at the residence of Patricia Stewart, 72, to deliver some post to the home. Ms Stewart was found lying on the steps in pain after she slipped on ice outside her house. But despite the pleas for help from the 72-year-old, Mr McCafferty ignored her – declaring he was “knackered”.

A spokesperson for the Royal Mail has now confirmed that Mr McCafferty had left his job as a postman.

They said: “We have been in touch with the customer concerned to express our apologies again and to update them following the conclusion of the investigation.

“We have also now completed our internal investigation but we are unable to comment further on any outcome for confidentiality reasons.”

Patricia was lying on her stairs for around 20 minutes after hitting her head during the fall.

But after thinking she had been saved when the postie arrived, her hopes were quickly dashed.

In reply to her asking for help, Mr McCafferty said: “I can't help you pal.”

He explained how he was “too knackered” to help the poor woman – and went on his way.

22-year-old Hermes driver Karolina Domska eventually helped the woman after the driver found the grandmother-of-two crying on her stairs.

Ms Stewart's family was disgusted by the actions of the postman.

Niece Sheryl Harkins said: "What this gentleman did is disgusting.

“He deserves everything he is going to get.

"He shouldn't be working with the public."

The 72-year-old spoke to The Sun about the ignorance of the postman who refused to help her.

Patricia said: "Twenty minutes I was shouting 'help' and I was crying.

"I was lying partly in the snow and I banged my head.”

She added: "Even if he was knackered, at the end of the day that's his job."

The full comment from a Royal Mail spokesperson said: "We regularly remind our postmen and postwomen of the important role they play in their local communities.

"We have been in touch with the customer concerned to apologise and to inform them we are investigating this incident.”

“We are sorry for the distress this incident has caused.”

Although Mr McCafferty was initially suspended, the postman was later sacked for his actions.

An area manager visited Patricia to apologise in person for the incident that took place – as well as being given a box of chocolates.
