Ukraine: Crimean town of Dzhankoy rocked by explosion

Footage has emerged reportedly showing the aftermath of a missile strike on a depot in Crimea.

The video posted on Twitter shows a large plume of smoke over the Crimaean village of Vilne.

Express.co.uk is attempting to verify the clip which appeared online on Monday.

A Twitter user posted the clip online at 5.54am from an account named Aurora Borealis along with the caption: "Missiles hit the ammo depot near the village of #Vilne, #Crimea".

The same footage was shared by Twitter account Special Kherson Cat at 7.21am on Monday with the user writing: "For the third time in the past week, an attack on Russian military depots in Crimea has been reported.

"This time, ammunition depots were reportedly attacked near the village of Vilne. ~155km from the front line."

Express.co.uk has not been able to independently verify the footage.

It is as yet unclear when Monday's footage was recorded, but it comes after Crimea was rocked by two huge explosions on Saturday in a suspected drone attack by Ukraine.

The Moscow-installed leader of the region Sergei Aksyonov reported the drone attack succeeded in striking an ammunition depot but there were no known casualties.

Mr Aksyonov wrote on Telegram: "As a result of an enemy drone on the Krasnogvardeisky district, there was a detonation at an ammunition depot."

He added a decision was taken to evacuate people living within five kilometres of the zone, but did not specify which location was hit.

The Krasnogvardeisky district lies inland at the centre of the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, which was illegally annexed by Russia in 2014.

Meanwhile, Russia struck the Black Sea city of Odessa on Sunday, continuing a barrage of attacks which have damaged critical port infrastructure in southern Ukraine in the past week.

Officials said at least one person was killed and 22 others wounded in the early morning attack.

Four children were among those wounded in the blasts which badly damaged 25 landmarks across the city, including the historic Transfiguration Cathedral.

Moscow has been launching repeated attacks on Odessa, a key hub for exporting grain, since Russia cancelled a landmark grain deal on Monday amid Kyiv’s grinding efforts to retake its occupied territories.

Regional Governor Oleh Kiper said six residential buildings were destroyed in the strikes. Some people were trapped in their homes after the attack, which left rubble strewn in the street and partly blocking a road.

Svitlana Molcharova, 85, was rescued by emergency workers. But after she received first aid, she refused to leave her destroyed apartment. She said: "I will stay here."

Ivan Kovalenko, a 19-year-old resident of the building said: "I woke up when the ceiling started to fall on me. I rushed into the corridor. That’s how I lost my home in Mykolaiv, and here, I lost my rented apartment."

His unit revealed a partially collapsed ceiling and a balcony which fell from the side of the building. All the windows were blown out.

Ukraine’s air force reported on the Telegram messaging app that Russia had launched 19 missiles in the Odesa region, including five high-precision winged Onyx missiles and four sea-to-shore Kalibr cruise missiles. It said that Ukrainian air defenses shot down nine.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said on Sunday its forces attacked sites in Odessa "where terrorist acts against the Russian Federation were being prepared".

In a later statement, the ministry denied its attacks struck the Transfiguration Cathedral, claiming the destruction of the building was likely due to "the fall of a Ukrainian anti-aircraft guided missile".

The attacks come days after President Vladimir Putin pulled Russia out of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, a wartime deal which enabled Ukraine’s exports to reach many countries facing the threat of hunger.

Earlier Russian attacks have crippled export facilities in Odessa and nearby Chornomorsk, destroying 60,000 tons of grain, according to Ukraine’s Agriculture Ministry.
