Rishi Sunak battered Sir Keir Starmer at PMQs today, calling out his hypocrisy on pensioners and warning that a Labour Government would sell out older voters.

Labour is keen to accuse the Tories of being a threat to pensioners, with questions about how the party would fund its goal of abolishing National Insurance.

However, Mr Sunak categorically ruled out any cuts to state pensions to fund the promised tax cut, and blasted Sir Keir’s “scaremongering”.

The PM pointed out that the Triple Lock has benefited many people's pensions to the tune of thousands of pounds - and warned that Labour “always hit pensioners hard!”

Mr Sunak added: “It’s his mentors, Blair and Brown, who broke their promises, raised pension taxes by £118billion and delivered an insulting 75p rise in the state pension.

"As one Labour adviser just said, Brown destroyed our pension system. They did it before they’ll do it again!”

Sir Keir insisted on asking the same question again and again, wanting the PM to rule out any cuts to winter fuel allowance to fund the National Insurance pledge.

The PM pointed out it was his Government that just this winter provided double winter fuel payments to support pensioners.

He delivered a dressing down of the Labour leader, pointing to recently revealed words from Rachel Reeves’s own economics adviser calling for taxes to be put up on “codgers”.

“It’s Labour’s newest tax adviser who thinks pensioners should be taxed more - his words Mr Speaker!," said Mr Sunak.

“This adviser calls them codgers, he thinks that supporting them is a ‘disgrace’, and he thinks that their free TV licences are ‘ridiculous’.

“It’s Labour who hit pensioners with tax after tax and they would do it all over again!”

Later in the Commons session, Tory backbencher Sir Desmond Swayne rose to announce he had been the Lord Commission who signed Sir Keir Starmer’s special pension into law.

He joked: “He owes me one!”

Sir Desmond added: “The Prime Minister is right - Labour’s 75p was an insult to pensioners yet last year our Triple Lock afforded pensioners the highest increase in 30 years!”

Last month, the Daily Express exclusively revealed outrage after Labour hired a new tax adviser who called for elderly “codgers” to be whacked with new taxes.

Sir Edward Troup, the party’s tax tsar, called for sweeping tax rises and said pensioners should lose their free TV licences.

Appearing at a Resolution Foundation roundtable in 2019, Sir Edward called for increases to income tax, national insurance, VAT and corporation tax.

Advising politicians to raise taxes by stealth, he warned today’s pensioners have “had it ridiculously good”.
