BRITS are set to soak up the last of the week's 32C heatwave on Wednesday as the country gears up for two days of thunderstorms.

Thousands flocked to parks and beaches this week to make the most of the scorching weather yesterday.

Forecasters say the mercury is predicted to hit a whopping 32.2C in the south - making it hotter than Mumbai, India.

But the tide is set to turn in some areas, with low pressure from the Atlantic to blast away the ridge of hot air from the south.

Jim Dale, a forecaster at British Weather Services, suggested the change of pressure could cause extreme weather conditions, including flash flooding, hail and storms.

He told the Express: "There will be thunderstorms from Wednesday and Thursday this week.

"From Thursday, the scattered thunderstorms are likely to become more widespread in England and Wales.

"Low pressure from the south will push the high ridge of hot air away by the end of the week, which could cause flash flooding, hail, storms and even mini-tornadoes if you're really unlucky.

"So people should be prepared if they are planning to walk in the park with a t-shirt on."

       FEELING HOT HOT HOT

Mr Dale said the weather is "definitely unusual" as we do not normally "get this sort of heat in September".

It comes after the mercury reached 30.7C at Gogerddan, Wales, on Tuesday - the "highest temperature recorded" for the day.

Forecasters also said that some areas were edging close to recording an official heatwave.

But temperatures are expected to drop on Wednesday and Thursday, with the Met Office issuing a yellow warning for thunderstorms.

The alert for Devon, Cornwall and parts of South Wales is in force from 11am tomorrow.

And the yellow thunderstorm warning has been extended to the entire north of England and Wales and West Midlands on Thursday.

       TEMPERATURES SOAR

It comes after temperatures hit 30.1C in Northolt, West London, on Tuesday.

The Met Office revealed it was only the seventh time in September that temperatures have smashed 30C in the last 50 years.

Elsewhere across the UK, the mercury soared to 25C.

Greg Dewhurst, a Met Office meteorologist said low pressure moving in from the southwest on Wednesday will make it "less hot" in parts of Wales and Northern Ireland.

But "hot air" is set to remain in central and eastern England and Scotland, bringing highs of 26C to 29C.

Mr Dewhurst said: "We often get a warmer spell particularly early on in September.

"August was particularly cool... and cloudy, so this spell is the warmest spell of weather since July for the UK."

September has already beaten this August's highest temperature of 27.2C in the UK, which last happened in 2016.

       THUNDERSTORMS

However, the warm weather of the past few days will be disrupted by two days of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Met Office spokesman Stephen Dixon said that, although good conditions will last until Wednesday, "rain and instability" will follow, leading to possible thunderstorms in southwest England.

The Met Office has warned that the southwest is at risk of heavy rain and lightning.

Meanwhile, tomorrow all of Northern Ireland, Wales, and most of northern England also have alert in place.

By mid-September, conditions are expected to get even less settled with showers and chances of longer spells of rain.

This rain could become heavy, particularly in the west and northwest - and more thunderstorms will be possible throughout the UK.

However, it's not all bad as temperatures are expected to stay above average for the time of year.

According to the Met Office’s long-range forecast, towards the end of the month, a tropical storm is due to cross the Atlantic which could significantly affect weather in the UK.
