Uber drivers are planning a 24-hour strike this week across the UK as the nation faces further travel woes amid ongoing fuel shortages. the United Private Hire Drivers (UPHD) union which represent drivers called on users to "switch off the app" and "join the protest" planned in London.

The strike is planned to go ahead for 24 hours on Wednesday, October 6.

This is the second round of recent action after drivers staged another standstill on September 28.

However, the previous strike wasn't endorsed by the UPHD, with the App Drivers and Couriers Union (ADCU) behind the first round of action.

The UPHD - the drivers' arm of the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB) - is calling on everyone in the UK to join in by switching off the app on October 6.

This means anywhere that has Uber could see shortages of drivers, including major cities such as London, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Leeds.

People have also been invited to join the protest outside Uber's office at London's Aldgate Tower from 11am.

       Why are Uber drivers striking?

In a list of demands tweeted by the UPHD, drivers have called for:

Uber has come under increased criticism recently for failing to implement a court ruling to pay waiting time, which it says makes up around 40 percent of an Uber driver's working time, and claims large numbers of drivers are being unfairly sacked, according to unions.

Speaking after last week's strike action, Yaseen Aslam, president of ADCU, said: "It is shameful that Uber continues to defy the highest court in the land to cheat 70,000 workers out of pay for 40 percent of their true working time.

"The drivers know they deserve and are legally entitled to much more than Uber is offering.

"This strike is just the beginning and there will be much more unrest until Uber does the right thing and pays drivers all that they are owed, both pension contributions and working time."
