More areas across the UK are expected to be hit with snow as weather maps reveal a blast from the south west right up to Scotland.

Cardiff, Birmingham, Manchester and Iverness are just some of the cities that will see snow throughout the month. Weather maps by WX Charts show snow sweeping through the country on January 24 with some freezing rain.

The depth of snow will vary between less than 1cm and 5cm, throughout a large stretch of the country indicated by the purple shade across the UK on the organisation's map.

Along with snow, one area in Scotland is expected to be hit by freezing rain, as revealed by the orange splash on the WXCharts map, but sub-zero temperatures are expected around the whole country, with unsurfaced roads likely to be frozen over.

However, the cold blast and snow are not waiting to hit the nation.

According to the Met Office, accumulations could surge up to between 5cm and 10cm for parts of northern Scotland across the next two days with the national weather service issusing yellow weather warnings over the cold weather conditions.

The Met Office's yellow weather warnings state: "Outbreaks of sleet and snow are likely to push in from the southwest during Wednesday, affecting some places especially during the afternoon and evening."

The office's warnings carry on until tomorrow, with the latest issued until 11.59pm in northern Scotland.

It added: "Sleet and showers will continue for the rest of Wednesday and Thursday, before dying out by the end of Thursday evening. Northwest Scotland and the Northern and Western Isle will see the most frequent showers on Wednesday, before extending to the Northeast on Thursday.

"Further accumulations of 3-7 cm are expected to low levels, with 10 - 15cm possible above 150 metres. Where any modest daytime thaw has occurred, icy stretches are likely on untreated surfaces."

There are currently no weather warnings for the rest of the week, however low temperatures are expected to continue throughout the week and fronts moving from the south est could mean further snow and warnings.

According to Met Office deputy chief forecaster Chris Almond Thursday could see some of the "lowest temperatures of winter so far" dropping as low as -15C.

He added: "By Sunday, milder air will have moved in across much of the UK, meaning rain is more likely than snow as we get to the end of the weekend. Northern Ireland and Western Scotland are most likely to see some showery outbreaks of rain and breezy conditions through Sunday, with conditions further south and east drier and more settled."
