Great white shark attack victim swims ashore in Perth

A man's leg was torn apart during a vicious shark attack while surfing on a popular Australian beach as horrified beachgoers watched from the shore as he swam 600 metres to safety.

Witnesses to the horrific scene said the man, who is in his 20s, “saved his own life” after he swam 600 metres back to shore at Gnarabup Beach in the Margaret River region.

The man was badly bitten on his leg by a great white shark and heroically paddled back to shore while bleeding heavily at 8.45am on Monday.

He had “lost a lot of blood” but miraculously reached the shore.

The surfer was given first aid by an off-duty nurse on the sand before he was rushed to Margaret River Hospital to be treated for the deep gash in his left leg.

The surfer is currently in a stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.

Terrifying footage taken from the shore showed the moment when the shark rapidly approached the man, causing his surfboard to be flung into the air.

According to witnesses, the man lost a lot of blood while attempting to break free from the shark's grasp before managing to paddle back to the shore.

The statement read: “To ensure the safety of our community, please do not enter the water during this time.”

The attack is currently under investigation by Western Australia's Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.
